As we all know that India’s weather is one the most vibrant weather in the world ranging from tropical in the south to temperate and alpine in the Himalayan north, these weather condition varies from time to time in an year.
So for the summers the time period is mainly for northern India starts from the month of April and ends somewhere around in mid October. But in this year of 2020 to be precise the year of COVID 19 we become used to of not only some changes in lifestyle but also few changes in normal weather condition.
This year the month of May is not that hot that we expect from it usually, we have been witnessing some cold weather because of increase in rainfall caused by extended tenure of Western Disturbances that usually prevails in Jan, Feb and March months of the year .
Some factual data by IMD ( Indian Meteorological Department ) states that there were 354 heavy rainfall events (absolute rainfall above 64.5 mm) across India in March and April.
Apart from IMD data we are also witnessing some anomalies in weather condition of Delhi like frequent thunderstorms and heavy rains, also some regions of Himachal Pradesh is still having snowfall in this month of May which is something considered out of the ordinary.
Now you all are thinking why this year has an extended tenure of Western Disturbances before we head there let’s understand What is Western Disturbances, basically it is an Extra-tropical storm originating in the Mediterranean region that brings sudden winter rain to the northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent. It originates because a high-pressure area over Ukraine and neighboring countries, causing the intrusion of cold air from Polar Regions towards an area of relatively warmer air ( Indian subcontinent ) with high moisture and then precipitates because of Himalayan hindrance in northern region of India.
Now answer for your first question which was “Why this year has an extended tenure of Western Disturbances”
There are allegedly two reasons for this:
- The unusual warm temperature in Eurasia
2. The warm and cool pattern over the Atlantic Ocean which is also known as North Atlantic multiple decadal oscillation it is a natural pattern of warm and cool phases in North Atlantic sea surface – temperatures. In layman’s language it is an elongated form of something like El nino and La nina.
These two factors could be the reason of this anomaly in Western Disturbances.
Now what are the after affect these showers will make in our life has a simple answer that we can ask directly to Agriculture sector which highly depends on the vagaries of Indian weather condition especially MONSOONS. These showers has not only affected the ready crop of farmers but also it will affect the monsoons which is about to come in upcoming months by delaying it or decreasing its intensity.
